Hispanic Initiative program on a trip to Kansas City. The goal of the Hispanic Initiative program is to promote and encourage hispanic students in southwest Missouri to attend Missouri State for their university studies. The program also has volunteers who help area high school students with tutoring.For the third year in a row now, I have had the opportunity to take a group of my students and join with a group of students from Monett High School to spend the day touring the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and afterward enjoying strolling around the Country Club Plaza.
At the art museum first we have lunch in Rozelle Court, and then we participate in a guided tour of Spanish pieces. It is interesting because we get to see pieces dating back hundreds of years to the more modern as well. They didn't have any Picasso this year, but they did have their Monets back (even though not Spanish, we stopped to see them anyway - how could you not?!).
The framed painting is Monet's Boulevard des Capucines, and the other, obviously, is one of his Water Lillies paintings. Don't you love how the students look like they're studying it so intently? The tour guide liked making them get up real close to the paintings. =)After the art museum we always head to the Plaza where we spend some time noticing the sculptures and shopping. Kansas City's sister city is Sevilla, Spain, so the architecture is very Spanish. The students usually like this part of the day the best, as they get to shop at many stores that we don't have in Springfield.
It's a nice treat. =) We end the day with dinner at one of the Plaza's restaurants.
This year we ate at the Cheesecake Factory again. This time I had breakfast, and it was really good! I'll have to keep that in mind. Oh, and the tropical smoothie was absolutely delicious!
At the end of the day, we're all tired, and the bus drive home seems to take forever, but all in all, it ends up being a good day. What a nice way to end the school year!
