SPAIN WON!!!! What an amazing thing to be in Spain and witness Spain win against Portugal, their huge rival, to advance to the quarter finals of the World Cup. Incredible. When Villa scored the only goal of the game, the café my friend Liz and I were in went crazy; the noise was deafening. And then when the game was over and Spain had won, the Plaza went crazy - people were yelling, hugging, blowing horns (make-shift vuvuzelas made from everything from regular little horns that you buy to modified orange pilons), dancing, jumping up and down and just celebrating. All of the cafés in the Plaza Mayor had set up TVs outside so that everyone could sit and watch - the atmosphere was electric! Although Spain itself battles great internal division between its regions, this World Cup has truly brought everyone together, even if just for a month. I can't wait until Saturday's game - ¡Que viva España! (Long live Spain!)
Plaza Mayor, Salamanca - watching the Spain vs. Portugal game
We don't have classes for the next three days because we're all attending a conference for Teachers of Spanish. The days will be very long (longer than normal), but hopefully it will be interesting. We shall see... :)
